Last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert for ready-to-eat pasta meals that have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The public health alert was issued in conjunction with a Sept. 29 recall by Nate's Fine Foods of Roseville, California, after testing revealed a link between the company's pasta and a nationwide outbreak of Listeriosis infections. Now, the FDA has announced three new recalls and one expanded recall in connection with the deadly Listeria outbreak.
The recalls were initiated by The Kroger Co., Giant Eagle, Inc., Demers Food Group, and Albertsons Companies, and all affect ready-to-eat pasta meals and prepared pasta salads. All four recalls were initiated because these products contain a recalled pasta ingredient manufactured by Nate’s Fine Foods.
The recalled pasta is part of an ongoing Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) investigation into a Listeria outbreak that has sickened 20 people to date, resulting in 19 hospitalizations and four deaths. While the original investigation in June centered around ready-to-eat chicken Alfredo meals sold at Kroger and Walmart, the pasta products produced by Nate's Fine Foods are being recalled out of an abundance of caution.

What To Do if You Have the Recalled Pasta Products
If you have any of the pasta meals included in any of these recalls or the previous Nate's Fine Foods-issued recall, you are urged not to consume them.
Instead, they should be thrown away or returned to the original place of purchase for a refund. The CDC also recommends cleaning any surfaces that may have come into contact with the affected foods out of an abundance of caution.
Common symptoms of a Listeriosis infection include fever, muscle aches, chills, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and other gastrointestinal symptoms. In more serious cases, it can cause headache, stiff neck, confusion, and loss of balance. Listeria is especially dangerous for pregnant individuals, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Contact a healthcare provider immediately if you experience these symptoms.
Questions regarding these recalls can be directed to each company's customer service department, which can be found on the individual recall announcements. Questions regarding the public health alert can be directed to Nate’s Fine Foods at 916-677-7303 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. PST Monday through Friday.
